Tooth Replacement
(Prosthodontics)

We can help you find a functional and aesthetic option to replace teeth that are essential for keeping a healthy body

Our Tooth Replacement Services

A comprehensive assessment and x-rays of the individual teeth or whole mouth is required with one of our dentists before discussing which option is best.

Dentures

Also known as a plate or false teeth, dentures can be used to replace a few, or all missing teeth in a jaw. They are removable for easy cleaning and are a quick method to replace multiple teeth in one go. The remaining teeth usually do not need to be altered for the dentures to fit.

Crown and Bridge

Sometimes referred to as a cap, a crown and bridge is mostly used to replace one or two teeth at most. These are fixed in place and cannot be removed unless they require replacement. Usually there needs to be teeth on either side of the gap to be the most effective. The adjacent teeth needs some alteration to fit the crown that anchors the bridge.

Implants

Requires placement of a screw-like appliance into the jaw bone to hold the crown which is the part of the implant that is seen in the mouth. Can be used to replace single or multiple teeth. Implants are considered a more invasive surgical method. Healing time is required between appointments, usually 3-6months.

Bone grafting and gum augmentation may need to be completed before placing the implant.

At the moment, we prefer to refer people who choose implants to one of our trusted specialists to complete the work. We are still happy to provide general advice about implants.

Benefits of Replacing Lost Teeth

Gaps in our teeth can trap debris and make it difficult to chew food. People tend to only chew on one side which lead to muscle and jaw pain. Due to the discomfort, some people may restrict the variety of foods they eat. A lack of diversity across the food groups can lead to malnutrition and other medical conditions.

It's easier for food and plaque to become wedged between teeth causing discomfort. Having gaps in our teeth are less protective against plaque and are usually more difficult to keep clean.

Our teeth will gradually move when there is nothing beside to hold it in place. The teeth can become loose and painful from chewing with less teeth. They can grow out of the gum and scratch the gum on the opposite side.

Talking involves using the muscles in our mouth and face. Our teeth and jaw bone creates a framework to keep these muscles in an ideal form so we can speak normally. Without them, the muscles lose their shape and are unable to move they way they normally do.

As the jaw bone disappears from the lack of functional teeth, our face shape can start to shrink as well. This can lead to jaw pain and general discomfort. Although possible to reduce these effects, it is often a complex, lengthy and costly process.

Maintaining Our Oral Health

Brushing correctly twice a day and cleaning between teeth at least once daily is the best way to take care of our teeth and gums. Ensure the toothbrush is reaching behind teeth beside a gap as it can easily accumulate plaque. Using a mirror can help see where the toothbrush is going. Limiting sugary and acidic foods will slow down any damage from plaque. Drinking water after every meal and snack to wash away the sugar and food debris will help too.
