Oral Health Care at Home
Prevention is better than cure!
Here are some tools and techniques to help look after your teeth and gums between appointments. If you would like advice tailored to you please book an appointment with one of our clinicians.

Brushing
A soft manual or electric toothbrush is best. For most people twice daily is enough to prevent disease. Don't forget to brush gently along the gumline as well!

Interdental Brush
Good for removing plaque around crowns, bridges and braces. Works well with teeth, especially if the gaps are bigger than usual. Once or twice daily is good. They come with lots of little bristles like a toothbrush, or have more spread out bristles which are usually made of silicone.

Flossing
They can come on a handle or in a box. Wrap the floss around the side of the tooth moving up and down to avoid cutting the gums. This is method will remove more plaque too. Once or twice a day is good.

Tongue Cleaner
You can find a specialised tongue cleaner at the shops or online. The tongue can hold a lot of bacteria causing bad breath and other problems. Some toothbrushes have a cleaner on the back of the head. Clean the tongue daily before or after brushing.

Mouthwash
Not always needed, but a daily type can be used after meals to wash away food bits and neutralise the acid in our mouths. Is helpful for those who are struggling to brush well. Some conditions such as periodontitis may need a stronger mouthwash for a few weeks.

Waterfloss
Great for removing new plaque. Can become messy so best to use over a sink. Aim the tip to the gaps between teeth. Use a less powerful setting to start with if you are new to this. It is best to use this once or twice daily.

Drinking Water
It's a good habit to drink plain water after meals or a snack. It will help wash away food particles and neutralise the acid in the mouth. Staying hydrated will help our body produce saliva which assist in eating and fighting plaque.

Chewing Gum
Gum can help pull away food particles left on the teeth after eating. Some types contain extra ingredients which help to slow the growth of plaque. Sugar free gum is best as it will not damage teeth.
