Our Restorative Services

Aesthetic Fillings

Fillings are versatile and do more than just fill a tooth with cavity. They can be used to change the appearance and colour of teeth such as closing gaps or lightening the tooth shade. We can provide a detailed assessment of your teeth and discuss the possibilities that aesthetic fillings can have for your smile.

Tooth Coloured Fillings

Tooth coloured fillings can mimic the strength of natural teeth and have a multitude of shades to blend in with the natural colour of your teeth. Our experienced clinicians can create a filling that will restore the function of your teeth and blend seamlessly into your natural tooth. You may even forget that you have a filling there!

Amalgam

Amalgam is a silvery, metallic coloured filling. They are very strong and can often last over 20 years before requiring replacement. Unfortunately they can contribute to tooth cracks or fractures and do not blend well with the natural colour of teeth. We can help determine whether an amalgam filling is suitable for your situation and discuss where it can be best utilised.

Our knowledgable clinicians can provide a tailored treatment plan to stabilise decayed teeth and create a more beautiful smile within your budget

Cases for Fillings

There are many situations where a filling is the best option for your tooth. Here are some examples of the cases where they should be considered:

Decayed Teeth (cavities): plaque can destroy tooth structure, making it more susceptible to breakage. The pulp, which keeps the tooth alive, is vulnerable when teeth begin to decay.

Chipped and Cracked Teeth: occurs from excessive chewing, other forces and weak teeth.

Discolouration: from consumption of highly coloured food, medical conditions or worn down teeth.

Gaps between teeth: from misaligned teeth or thickened tissue between teeth. Can sometimes happen as teeth are shifting to fill other spaces.

Our experienced team can assess your teeth for the presence of abnormalities and discuss the most appropriate options with you

Effects of Untreated Cavities

Cavities are concerning as it can lead to pain, tooth loss and become life threatening if not taken care of. It is one of the most common oral health diseases but can be easily treated and prevented if managed early enough.

Having regular checks and cleans to remove bacteria is the best way to prevent cavities and is the most affordable option long term.

Repairing cavities becomes costly the longer they are left untreated, and eventually conventional methods will not be enough to keep the tooth.

A tooth with an existing filling is still susceptible to new cavities so care must be taken to keep the mouth as plaque free as possible. If a new cavity develops along the edge of the filling it can quickly become very deep and close to the pulp of the tooth.

At 7 Day Dentists we can help find cavities while they are manageable and prevent them from causing further damage.

Appointments for Fillings

A filling can be placed in one appointment, but multiple may be required if more than one tooth requires treatment or if the cavity is very close to the pulp. X-rays are usually taken to check the depth of the cavity and to find any abnormalities that may affect the treatment outcome. Other diagnostic tests may be done beforehand as well to make sure the filling is the most suitable option for the tooth. Local anaesthetic can be provided for pain relief, especially where there is sensitivity or deeper cavities.

Preparing the Tooth

Any decay and infection of the tooth will be removed if it is present. Minor adjustments may be made to the enamel to ensure the the filling will firmly attach to the tooth surface.

Placing Filling Material

The tooth is washed, dried and primed, ready for the filling material. The filling material is often placed in layers to ensure it fills the cavity and completely seals the edges.

Finishing and Polishing

Once the bulk of the filling is placed, we polish and shape the filling to better blend in as a natural tooth that is functional.

Maintaining Our Fillings

Brushing correctly twice a day and cleaning between teeth at least once daily is the best way to take care of our teeth. Limiting sugary and acidic foods will slow down the damage from plaque. Drinking water after every meal and snack to wash away the sugar and food debris will help too.

Fillings in some areas of the mouth are more inclined to chipping and fracture. We will let you know whether more care should be given for your type of filling feel free to ask us about any other precautions that should be taken.
