Our Crown and Veneer Services
Veneers
Veneers are a strong, thin layer of material often used for changing the shape and colour of teeth. They sit on the tooth like a half cap to hug most sides of the tooth. It can used for a single tooth or in combination with multiple to create an even, balanced smile. They are be made from porcelain or composite depending on the desired outcome and situation.
At 7 Day Dentists we can provide a detailed assessment of your teeth and discuss a design with veneers that will enhance your smile and suit your budget.
Crowns
Crowns cover the entire tooth surface to provide increased strength. They reduce the chances of chipping and cracking and keeps the pulp safe. They are made from porcelain, metal or a combination of both depending on the circumstances. The porcelain has a multitude of shades that can be colour matched to seamlessly integrate with your other teeth.
Our experienced clinicians can create a crown that will increase the longevity of your tooth without compromising the aesthetics of your smile within a few appointments.
Our clinicians can guide you through the different options available and help discuss which one is the best for your situation
Cases for Crowns and Veneers
There are many situations where a crown or veneer is the best options for your tooth. Here are some examples of the cases when they should be considered:
Failing large conventional restorations: very large restorations can be difficult to maintain, so a stronger material and technique may be better to keep the healthy for longer.
Chipped and Cracked Teeth: from excessive chewing, other forces on weakened teeth.
Discolouration: from consumption of highly coloured food, medical conditions or worn down teeth.
Gaps between teeth: from misaligned teeth or thickened tissue between teeth, will sometimes appear as teeth are shifting to fill other spaces.
Root Canal Treatment: root canal treated teeth need a good seal around the outer layer of the tooth to prevent bacteria from reinfecting the canal, and strength to hold together the remaining tooth structure.
At 7 Day Dentists we can assess the suitability of crowns and veneers for these cases and find a treatment plan that suits your budget
Benefits of Crowns and Veneers
Crowns and veneers are used for teeth where a normal filling is not ideal. They are great for providing long lasting results that can enhance the look of your smile.
Strength
They provide strength by hugging the sides of the tooth like a cap. Often significantly worn down teeth or those with large cavities and existing fillings would benefit the most. They are usually required after some dental treatments such as root canal treatment to ensure they have a good seal and strength for many years.
Colour
Compared to a normal filling, they provide a more even colour for the tooth. Porcelain in particular can maintain its colour over a longer time period and is more resistant to stains when taken care of properly.
Shape
It may be possible to camouflage misaligned teeth or to fill any gaps between teeth with a crown or veneer. Sometimes orthodontics (straightening teeth) may be required beforehand to achieve the best results. It is essential to talk to a dentist to discuss whether this is possible for your case, as it can be quite complex and is not suitable for everyone.
Crown and Veneer Appointments
Placing a crown or veneer usually requires 2-3 appointments but may be more or less depending on the situation. X-rays are taken to check for any abnormalities before starting any treatment. Other tests may be done beforehand as well to make sure the treatment is suitable for the tooth. Local anaesthetic is often given as the procedure may become uncomfortable and sensitive without it.
Preparing the Tooth
The edges of the tooth will be trimmed to create enough room for the crown or veneer to fit. If the tooth is not trimmed the tooth will look very bulky after the treatment is finished.
Where it's appropriate, any cavities present will be filled before the tooth is trimmed.
Stabilising the Tooth
For porcelain and metallic, it may take a few weeks for the crown or veneer to be made. An impression of the tooth is taken to help place a temporary crown or veneer whilst waiting for the final product. You can eat and drink with the temporary crown although care should be taken with harder foods as it may crack if not looked after properly.
Fitting and Cementation
Once the crown or veneer is made, it is ready to be placed on the tooth. A fit check is done to make sure it's compatible with the prepared tooth. Sometimes minor adjustments are made to ensure the new tooth fits with the ones surrounding it.
Maintaining Our Crowns and Veneers
Brushing correctly twice a day and cleaning between teeth at least once daily is the best way to take care of our teeth. Limiting sugary and acidic foods will slow down the damage from plaque. Drinking water after every meal and snack to wash away the sugar and food debris will help too.harder foods as it may crack if not looked after properly.
